Las Olas Boulevard Receives
a Landscape Rejuvenation
Las Olas Boulevard between S.E. 6th and S.E. 11th Avenue has been
transformed into the Merriam Webster's Dictionary definition of a
boulevard, 'a broad often landscaped thoroughfare'. The initial
beautification took place in the 3rd quarter of 2003 and has been
recently upgraded and enhanced.
"This beautification of the medians was the
result of the leadership role that Sharon Schwartz took as the Chair of
the Las Olas Association’s Beautification Committee,"
said Chris Gaus, the president of the
association. "Sharon
worked closely with the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation
Department and the results are outstanding!"
Sharon is a long time member of the
board of directors
and is vice president
of City National Bank at 350 East Las Olas Boulevard.
The withered grass on the medians has been replaced by rows of thick,
St. Augustine 'Palmetto' sod. Over 600 richly colored corkscrew Crotons,
'Mamey', have been installed in a wavy, serpentine pattern. Then three
varieties of beautiful, graceful bromeliads
were artfully planted on each median. Surrounding the trees,180 delicate
Neoregelia 'Fireball' and 28 softly colored Aechmea 'Patricia' were
planted in the wooden planters that were recently painted in a muted
cocoa shade.
The final touch, 134 magnificently regal Neoregelia Cruentas were
interspersed among the Crotons. The overall effect is of an
aesthetically pleasing promenade that invites you to stroll the
beautiful Las Olas Boulevard. The landscaping was done with the help of
Mike Pursell, the chief horticulturist
for the City of Fort Lauderdale. The two men who did most of the actual
work were Tim Mason, a horticulturist and Tom
Manus, a municipal maintenance
worker with the city.
"I designed the median landscape and
reviewed it with Sharon Schwartz," Mr.
Pursell added.
Sharon was all smiles recently when she and Phillip G. Thornburg, the
superintendent of parks,
took a walk on Las Olas to admire the new look. Amanda Greene was also
on hand to thank Sharon and Phillip for "…
a job well done." "This
was another example of the value of the Las Olas Association in making a
difference in not only the aesthetics of Las Olas, but in working
together to insure the continuation of the explosive renaissance that
Las Olas has been enjoying," Ms. Greene
said.
In addition to the plantings, all of the wooden boxes around the trees
were painted a burnt sienna, thanks to the hands-on help of Chris Gaus.
